Half a Paycheck: The Baby Letter and the First House

You've heard women couldn't get credit cards until 1974, but the discrimination that cost young couples the most happened at the mortgage desk, where a wife's paycheck might count for half, or nothing, without a doctor's letter.

About this episode

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, a young married couple could walk into a lender together and walk out with a loan figured on his paycheck alone. June and Nate rebuild the rules from federal hearings, civil rights reports and a 1972 newspaper story: the co-signer, the reapplication in the husband's name, the fifty percent rule and the "baby letter," a doctor's statement about a wife's birth control.

They also take apart the line everyone repeats, that women couldn't get a credit card until 1974, and explain why the real story is about the house. Plus Price Check on what rent took out of a paycheck then and now, The Rulebook, and Ask Them This: three questions to take to someone who was twenty then.

Hosted by June and Nate, from real reporting. Supported by SagaSeal.
